The African Airlines Association, (AFRAA) on September 7 announced a jump in the traffic carried by African airlines in August, which reached 98.4 percent of the 2019 level.
According to AFRAA, domestic market share was estimated at 34 percent, intra-Africa at 29 percent and intercontinental at 37 percent.
At the same time, the association stated that the total number of intercontinental routes
operated by African Airlines exceeded those in the pre-pandemic levels since October 2022.
Moreover, the report noted that some major Airports like in Johannesburg, Nairobi, Addis Ababa, Lusaka, Cairo, Casablanca, Abidjan and Lome in the intra-Africa connectivity reached or exceeded pre-Covid levels since December 2022.

The results also showed that in 2023 the Airlines witnessed a narrowing revenue
gap that was attributed to Covid-19 compared to 2022.
In addition, the association highlighted that in the first three months of the year, African airlines missed the levels attained in a similar period in 2019 by US$ 0.3 billion.
AFRAA Forecast
However, the Association expects the Airlines to further narrow in the second quarter to
S$0.2 billion.
The Association forecasts that 2023 will be a good year compared to the previous
year’s stating that the AFFRA airlines revenue will go as high as $3.5 billion for all African
Airlines Compared to 2019.
Additionally, the Association revealed that the industry blocked funds in July to $2.200 billion
compared to $2.274 billion in June.

According to AFFRA data, some 22 countries still account for the blocked funds globally.
What’s more, the association also revealed that 14 of the countries were from Africa accounting for 70 percent of the blocked accounts.
AFFRA said it will meet with Central Bank governors to agree on a solution of the blocked accounts as part of the engagements to have the funds released.
