The technology giant accelerates sustainability in mining with new automation and electrification solutions.
ABB, a global leader in electrification and automation, is spearheading the shift toward a sustainable mining future. The company is providing advanced tools to reduce emissions and improve efficiency across mining processes.
According to Joachim Braun, ABB’s President of Process Industries, their focus on green technology isn’t new—ABB has supported energy-intensive mining with automation solutions for over a century.
However, today’s technology allows the company to offer actionable steps toward net-zero emissions for the mining industry.
“Technology has been transformative, particularly in mining,” Braun said. He highlighted ABB’s eMine Simulation Solution, which enables customers to model and optimize fleet operations and renewable energy integration before investing.
“This data-driven approach is a game-changer, enabling customers to model scenarios, mitigate risks and optimize operations.”

ABB Survey Highlights Green Transition Efforts
The recent ABB mining survey, involving insights from over 400 industry experts, shows that 53% of mining professionals plan significant changes to achieve net-zero transformation in the next five years.
Braun believes these findings reflect a turning point for the industry. “Mining is at a pivotal point,” he said. “Technologies like electrification, automation, and digitalization will have the greatest impact.”
The company is set to showcase this report at the upcoming International Mining and Resources Conference (IMARC), where ABB will host an exclusive executive roundtable. Industry leaders will discuss strategies for achieving net-zero emissions by 2030.
Collaboration with Industry Giants
ABB’s partnerships with companies like FLSmidth, Perenti, and Komatsu underscore the company’s collaborative approach.
These alliances help speed up the development of new technologies aimed at reducing environmental impact. “Electrification in mining, once thought impossible, is now a reality and a key part of the industry’s push towards sustainability,” Braun said.
For instance, ABB’s eMine Trolley System has cut diesel consumption by up to 90% in some operations, demonstrating a fast-track path to decarbonization.
Moreover, ABB recently teamed up with Komatsu to develop the eMine Robot Automated Connection Device (ACD), a high-power truck charging system that eliminates the need for human intervention.
“Collaboration across the mining industry has already been proven to enable real and faster progress,” Braun stated. This collaboration aims to ensure sustainable growth while improving safety and productivity in mining operations.
ABB’s Vision for the Future
Looking to the future, Braun emphasizes the need for mining companies to adopt automation, digitalization, and electrification fully.
“With the right approach, we can drive positive change across the sector,” he said. Braun believes these technologies will help meet growing demands for resources while reducing environmental impact.
The adoption of automation and digitalization, he adds, will not only make operations more efficient but will also make mining a more attractive industry.
ABB is confident that its solutions, from automated systems to powerful modeling tools, will guide mining companies through the energy transition.
As Braun concluded, “We cannot wait for the perfect solution when we have the tools to make a real difference today.”
