Tech Boost for Kenya: Liquid, IBM, and Christian Aid Empower Communities

Liquid Intelligent Technologies, a subsidiary of Cassava Technologies and a leading pan-African tech firm, has joined forces with Christian Aid and IBM in Kenya to host an innovative workshop focused on addressing Africa’s pressing sustainable development issues.

The design-thinking workshop focused on UN Sustainable Development Goals which aimed to empower Christian Aid’s partners.

They gained ICT skills and digital literacy. Sixteen attendees were from Christian Aid. They represented Kenya, South Sudan, Nigeria, and DRC, while twenty-six participants came from partner organizations.

This initiative aligns with Liquid’s vision which is to create a digitally connected Africa. They aim to leave no one behind. The three organizations collaborated on this. Their goal is to uplift communities, and they are doing this through digital upskilling programs.

Neeraj Pradhan is the Acting CEO of Liquid Kenya. He stated, “At Liquid, we believe in Africa’s digital future. By working with Christian Aid and IBM, we are equipping communities.” He further added this will drive innovation and foster sustainable growth that will have a lasting global and local impact.

Christian Aid partners with civil society organizations to support communities across Kenya, with a strong focus on climate adaptation, governance, rights, and gender justice.

Through this new partnership, communities gain vital digital skills that enable practical action toward eradicating poverty.

The Kenya program also emphasizes community health, humanitarian response, and building long-term resilience. Key priorities include enhancing climate change adaptation and promoting inclusive markets.

Digital Skills Workshop Equips Kenyans for Sustainable Development

Christian Aid Kenya’s Country Director, Janet Ngombalu, emphasized the power of cross-sector partnerships. “Cross-sector partnerships add true value to ESG initiatives.”

She highlighted that Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) priorities are increasingly important for businesses—not just in Africa, but globally. “Our unique partnership shines a light forward,” she added, noting how collaboration between business and civil society can merge skills to drive socio-economic development in Kenya.

As ESG planning becomes more crucial, this partnership creates a timely opportunity to blend knowledge, resources, and tools.

By working together, the partners aim to amplify ESG impact through ICT innovation. During the workshop, participants gained practical insights into how to leverage technology for development. They also explored ways to ensure solutions remain culturally relevant and scalable.

IBM SkillsBuild powered the training sessions. They were equipping participants with essential design thinking principles to foster human-centered program development.

Moreover, as a free global education program, IBM SkillsBuild enhances access to technology education for adult learners, high school and university students, and faculty. It helps participants build valuable skills—including artificial intelligence—while opening doors to career opportunities.

John Matogo, IBM’s CSR Leader for the Middle East and Africa, underscored the urgency of digital upskilling. “As we enter 2025, AI is rapidly becoming central to every aspect of business,” he said. While this shift brings exciting possibilities, it also exposes a growing need for updated skills. “To address this gap, IBM is committed to training two million learners in AI by the end of 2026 through IBM SkillsBuild,” Matogo shared. The program offers free AI courses globally, aiming to equip professionals with the tools they need to succeed in tomorrow’s AI-driven workforce.

Through this collaboration, Liquid Intelligent Technologies reaffirmed its commitment to leveraging technology for good. By expanding access to digital skills, the company continues to support social and economic growth within Kenyan communities.
