Pakistan has taken a big step in digital growth with the 2Africa Submarine Cable System project. This effort is led by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) in collaboration with Transworld Associate (TWA), the local landing partner. The project will significantly enhance the country’s internet infrastructure.
The 2Africa cable system is one of the largest in the world, spanning 45,000 kilometers. It connects 46 locations across Africa, Europe, and the Middle East.
The system uses advanced Space Division Multiplexing (SDM1) technology with an incredible capacity of 180Tbps. Global giants like Meta and Vodafone are among the eight partners in the consortium driving this initiative.

Phase One Underway in Karachi
Phase 1 of the project began on December 1, 2024, with the Pre-Lay Shore End (PLSE) installation at Hawksbay, Karachi.
The second phase, involving the laying of the deep-sea cable, will start on April 1, 2025. The cable system is expected to go live in Pakistan by the end of 2025.
Once completed, the 2Africa cable will improve Pakistan’s internet bandwidth, reliability, and connectivity. This will support the country’s growing digital economy and provide better internet access to underserved regions.
This initiative marks a new chapter in Pakistan’s integration into the global digital ecosystem.
