MWC 2025: Ghana and MTN Ghana Sign MoU to Boost AI and Digital Skills

The Ministry of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovation signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with MTN Ghana.

The deal was announced at Mobile World Congress 2025 in Barcelona. This agreement will help young Ghanaians gain digital skills in artificial intelligence (AI), coding, data governance, and cybersecurity.

The MoU will last for 12 months. It provides a framework for cooperation between MTN Ghana and the government. The partnership is part of Ghana’s ‘One Million Coders’ initiative.

This program, launched by President John Romani Mahama’s administration, seeks to train one million young people in digital skills. The goal is to help them compete in the global technology industry.

A New Era for AI and Software Development in Ghana

The government also MTN’s contributions to Ghana’s digital economy. MTN is celebrating its 25th anniversary and has invested heavily in the country’s tech sector. The company donated a new MTN building to the government. This facility will serve as a center of excellence for AI and software development.

Hon. Samuel Nartey George, Ghana’s Minister of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovation, shared his excitement about the partnership.

“I must say that MTN Group and Ralph Mupita did not hesitate to express their interest in partnering with the government. To actualize this, we decided to put pen to paper and sign an MoU that will run for the next 12 months, governing the entire engagement between MTN and MTN Ghana in supporting our AI dream as part of MTN’s ongoing initiatives in Ghana.

“We are committed to backing MTN in this endeavor. That is why we are here today to sign this MoU. This agreement will serve as the framework for our collaboration moving forward, leading up to the launch of the One Million Coders program before May 7th this year.”

MTN Group CEO Ralph Mupita emphasized the company’s commitment to supporting Ghana’s digital growth.

“We are very happy to support the building out of the digital ecosystem that will be a catalyst for growth and expansion to meet Ghana’s socio-economic objectives. We must develop our own talent, our own software engineers, and do more around coding to ensure that young people in Ghana have opportunities not only in Ghana but all over the world.”

The ‘One Million Coders’ program will officially launch before May 7, 2025. It aims to provide hands-on coding and software engineering training for Ghanaian youth. The program will prepare them for jobs in the global tech industry.

Creating Opportunities for Ghanaian Youth

MTN Ghana believes that this initiative will create new opportunities for the country’s young people. By focusing on coding and software development, Ghana can position itself as a leader in Africa’s digital transformation.

Ebenezer Asante, a non-executive director at MTN Group, reiterated their commitment to supporting Ghana’s digital ambitions.

“As MTN, we are committed to doing what we have said we will do—to support Ghana in its next digital strategy. We look forward to seeing the impact of this initiative on the youth and the economy at large.”
