MTN Group Hosts Ugandan Delegation to Boost Innovation and Collaboration

MTN Group welcomed a top-level delegation from Uganda to its headquarters on Tuesday, November 19, 2024. The delegation was led by Mr. James Makula, Chairperson of Uganda’s National Start-up Technical Working Group. The visit aimed to strengthen partnerships and promote innovation, entrepreneurship, and regional collaboration.

The engagement focused on knowledge exchange and Uganda’s National Start-up Policy. Discussions also explored ways to leverage technology for economic growth. Advancing cross-border trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) was a key topic.

Ms. Yolanda Cuba, MTN Vice President for Southern and East Africa, said, “Africa’s potential lies in our ability to innovate and collaborate. At MTN, we are proud to be a key enabler of digital transformation, empowering entrepreneurs and building ecosystems that foster sustainable growth. This engagement with Uganda reflects our shared commitment to shaping Africa’s digital future.”

MTN and Uganda Unite for Progress

MTN’s close ties with Uganda were emphasized during the visit. Uganda is one of MTN’s earliest markets, with partnerships spanning three decades. Ambassador Kinta Nyago, Uganda’s Deputy High Commissioner to South Africa, said, “This visit underscores the importance of public-private partnerships in driving Uganda’s innovation agenda. MTN’s leadership in technology and its dedication to empowering start-ups resonates deeply with Uganda’s vision for economic transformation.”

The delegation toured MTN’s Innovation Lab. They explored new technologies and initiatives driving digital transformation across Africa. Professor Ernest Aboho, a delegation member, praised MTN’s efforts.

He said, “MTN’s innovative strategies and investments in digital inclusion are exemplary. This visit has provided valuable insights that will undoubtedly shape Uganda’s start-up policy and create opportunities for our youth and entrepreneurs.”

Ms. Nompilo Morafo, MTN’s Group Chief Sustainability and Corporate Affairs Officer, highlighted the value of partnerships. She said, “This collaboration is not just about exchanging ideas—it’s about creating tangible impact.

“Together, we can address Africa’s challenges with African solutions, ensuring inclusivity and sustainability in everything we do. MTN remains committed to empowering Uganda and the broader continent through innovation and partnerships.”

The visit ended with a renewed commitment to collaboration. Both MTN and Uganda aim to shape a sustainable digital future for Africa.
