Kenyan- based Abyssinia Iron and Steel Limited on Wednesday, December 20 signed a Power Purchase Agreement with Norway’s solar power financier Empower New Energy.
The two companies singed a 25-year contract that will result in the construction and operation of a 2.5 MW ground-mounted solar plant by the Spenomatic Group. The company is a leading renewable engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) company in East Africa.
Likewise, the ground-breaking partnership will result in a 2 MUSD investment by Empower New Energy for Abyssinia Steel, one of the leading steel manufacturing companies in the region.
Kenyan- based Abyssinia Group of Industries (AGI) has grown to become one of East Africa’s largest steel producers. Currently, the manufacturer has an annual capacity close to a million metric tons throughout the group. At the same time, the company has manufacturing and mining operations spread in East Africa. These countries are Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, and Rwanda.

Empower New Energy initiatives
The 2.5MWp solar project is Empower New Energy’s first investment in Kenya. The project marks a significant step in Kenyan- based Abyssinia Steel’s journey towards becoming100% powered by renewable energy.
More so, the company aims to harness the abundant solar resources in Kenya. Likewise, the companies new project will generate about 4,8 GWh of clean electricity per year. This will enble saving of about 2500 metric tonnes of carbon emissions annually. At the same time, reducing Abyssinia’s cost of electricity.
