GITEX Africa Kicks Off with Focus on Digital Empowerment

GITEX Africa third edition has begun in Marrakech. The event started today, April 15, 2025. Innovators and tech leaders have gathered. They are ready for three days of discussions. The focus is on Africa’s digital future.

GITEX Africa is now the continent’s largest tech event. It highlights African innovations and solutions. This year’s event is huge since Over 1,450 exhibitors are present. More than 740 startups are participating. Around 45,000 visitors are expected. They come from over 130 countries.

Opening Ceremony Highlights Commitment to Digital Africa

The opening ceremony featured a video from Morocco’s Head of Government. H.E. Aziz Akhannouch delivered the address. He stressed the need for ethical AI.

He wants an inclusive and well-regulated approach. Akhannouch also emphasized human rights in AI. He further highlighted data protection. AI should serve the public good.

“The time for passive admiration of technology is over. Now is the time for action, collaboration, and influence,” said H.E. Aziz Akhannouch.

Akhannouch positioned GITEX Africa as a catalyst. It will also boost continental coordination. The event is a hub for bold ideas. Moreover, it will be a launchpad for African innovation. He mentioned the risks of cyberattacks. He urged collective action on cybersecurity.

King Mohammed VI backs Digital Morocco 2030. This strategy aims for a strong digital economy. It includes tech alliances and rural connectivity. It also focuses on training AI talent. Africa must lead in technology.

Trixie LohMirmand, CEO of KAOUN International, shared her vision. She sees Africa as an innovation powerhouse. Dignitaries then took a commemorative photo. This captured the event’s unity and ambition.

“While the rest of the world has put Africa as the last thing on their minds, GITEX GLOBAL — the largest tech and startup show in the world — chose, three years ago, to launch globally first in Africa, the toughest continent by every metric. Startup Challenge and Connectivity Discussions Take Center Stage

The Supernova Challenge 2.0 was a major highlight. It is Africa’s largest early-stage startup pitch competition. The prize pool was $110,000 equity-free. Startups presented their innovative ideas. They pitched to global investors and leaders.

Abderrahmane Mounir spoke about a holistic approach. This includes connectivity and data centers. Roque Lozano likened connectivity to a car trunk. Trust and affordability are crucial. Dr. Mactar Seck compared connectivity to a highway. Affordability and rural access need attention. Dr. Oscar Ondo highlighted the importance of stable electricity. Dr. Emmanuel Manasseh noted the role of political will.

“There is no alternative to digital, and no digital will be possible without a trusted, affordable connectivity platform that enables full digitalization,” said Roque Lozano.

The second panel focused on “From Telco to TechCo.” Leaders discussed the telecom sector’s evolution. Mohamed Bennis called for better digital capabilities. Didier Kla said the shift is now a necessity. Mikko Lavanti shared Nokia’s ethical approach. Dr. Krish Ranganath emphasized commercially viable solutions.

Panelists agreed that this shift requires a change in mindset. Collaboration and local relevance are key. TechAfrica News also interviewed industry leaders. They discussed their latest innovations.
