Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Karim Badawi, met with Germany Director General for Economic Policy at CERAWeek 2025.
They discussed ways to improve energy security in both countries. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the event in the United States.
Germany is interested in purchasing Cypriot gas through Egypt. The discussions focused on a recent deal between Egypt and Cyprus. Under this deal, Egypt will receive gas from Cypriot fields and process it in Egyptian liquefaction facilities.

Egypt to Lease German Floating Regasification Unit
Both sides explored leasing one of Germany’s floating regasification units. The unit currently operates at Mukran Port in the Baltic Sea.
Egypt could use it to meet its growing energy needs. They agreed to send Egyptian specialists to Germany this month. The visit will finalize the contract terms for the unit’s use.
The two sides also discussed cooperation in hydrogen projects. “Germany has extensive experience in hydrogen projects, and Egypt has great potential in green hydrogen production,” they noted. Egypt aims to expand its role in producing and exporting hydrogen.
Carbon storage and trade were also key topics. Both sides discussed carbon market regulations and possible collaboration. They reviewed international standards for operating carbon markets efficiently.
The meeting highlighted strong energy cooperation between Egypt and Germany. Future agreements will strengthen energy security, hydrogen production, and carbon management. The two countries will continue working together to develop sustainable energy solutions.
