Debswana’s Commitment to Sustainable Waste Management in host Communities

Debswana has stepped up to support the Boteti District Council in rehabilitating the Letlhakane dumping site. The site was in poor condition, making it inaccessible and hazardous to the community. Debswana’s Orapa, Letlhakane, and Damtshaa Mines (OLDM) provided machinery to clear waste and improve the area.

The company helped by pushing scattered waste into designated cells. It also cleared rubble blocking the entrance. This effort made the site more accessible and safer for residents. The intervention addressed major health and environmental concerns.

Boteti District Council Principal Environmental Officer Kitsiso Kontle praised Debswana for its continuous support. “The rehabilitation of the landfill by Debswana has really helped put the landfill in a good condition and exemplary for waste management in the district,” he said.

A Step Towards Sustainable Development

Debswana’s initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities. This goal focuses on reducing the environmental impact of cities. Proper waste management is key to achieving this target.

The project required significant logistical support. OLDM provided heavy machinery to manage the waste more effectively. This move reduced health risks associated with improper waste disposal. The improved site now serves as an example of good waste management practices in the district.

Debswana’s proactive approach sets a standard for other companies. The mining industry often faces criticism for its environmental impact. However, Debswana is showing how corporate responsibility can lead to real improvements.

Corporate Responsibility and Community Impact

Kontle commended Debswana for its role in maintaining a clean and safe environment. “The landfill was in a deplorable state and causing a health hazard to those trying to access it,” he said.

Debswana recognizes that sustainability requires collaboration. The success of the Letlhakane dumping site project highlights the power of partnerships. When corporations and communities work together, they can achieve meaningful progress.

The company’s commitment to better waste management is ongoing. Debswana continues to support the Boteti District Council and other local groups. These efforts will contribute to long-term environmental sustainability.

The Letlhakane project is just one example of Debswana’s dedication to responsible waste management. The company remains committed to improving community living conditions through sustainable practices.
