World Bank Pledges $100 Million for Zambia’s Digital Growth

The World Bank has committed $100 million to improve Zambia’s digital infrastructure. This investment aims to expand internet access nationwide.

The Digital Zambia Acceleration Project (DZAP) was announced by Wengcai Zhang, World Bank’s Managing Director and Chief Administration Officer. The project focuses on increasing internet access and digital services in Zambia.

During a meeting with Zambia’s Technology and Science Minister, Felix Chipota Mutati, Mr. Zhang outlined the project’s details.

DZAP will receive funding from both national and regional International Development Association (IDA) funds, along with $20 million from unguaranteed commercial financing.

The initiative further aims to enhance broadband, last-mile infrastructure, and digital public infrastructure, benefiting both public and private sectors.

Boosting Digital Skills and Infrastructure

Zhang emphasized the project’s role in high-impact sectors and in developing employment-ready digital skills. He announced that the World Bank Board would likely approve the project by March 2025. In the interim, a Project Preparation Advance of $6 million is being processed to kickstart initial activities.

The project will establish a Project Implementation Unit within the Smart Zambia Institute. This unit will drive cross-government digital initiatives, ensuring cohesive efforts in digital transformation.

Zhang also voiced support for Zambia hosting the World Skills Africa Competition in Livingstone in April 2025. He highlighted the global significance of this event.

Minister Felix Mutati expressed gratitude for the World Bank’s support. He highlighted the importance of the $6 million Project Preparation Advance in addressing gaps in the Technical Education, Vocational and Entrepreneurship Training (TEVET) sector.

The meeting also included World Bank Zambia Country Manager Achim Fock and Milner Makuni, Director of Communication in the Ministry of Technology and Science. T

The DZAP will focus on expanding internet access and improving digital infrastructure across the country. This initiative will enhance the efficiency of both public and private sectors. The project aims to build a robust digital economy in Zambia, fostering growth and development.

The DZAP will drive internet expansion, digital skill development, and improved public services. The collaborative efforts of the World Bank and Zambian government aim to create a brighter digital future for Zambia.
