Airtel Uganda has launched Africa’s first AI-powered SMS Spam Alert System. The service offers automatic, real-time protection from scam messages.
It is the first telecom in East Africa to offer this technology. The system works on the network level without needing downloads or sign-ups.
Airtel’s service is free for all users. It silently scans messages and blocks scams before they reach your phone. The system uses AI to scan over 250 indicators. Suspicious messages are labeled with a clear tag: “SPAM ALERT.”
It also checks harmful links using a constantly updated list. This helps protect people from dangerous websites and phishing attempts.

Uganda Leads Africa in Telecom Safety Innovation
Over 60% of mobile users receive scam texts weekly, according to the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC). Many users lose money daily.
In 2024, mobile scams stole UGX 23 billion from users. Fraud and fake offers hit people in rural areas the hardest.
“This isn’t just innovation—it’s protection. We’re committed not only to connecting Ugandans but also helping them navigate the digital world safely,” said Soumendra Sahu, Managing Director, Airtel Uganda.
Minister of ICT, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, praised the move. He called it a “timely innovation” for building a safe digital society.
UCC Executive Director, George William Nyombi Thembo, said spam is often a scam gateway. He applauded Airtel’s smart, proactive approach.
The system learns from local fraud tricks like fake job offers and mobile money scams. It improves with every spam report received.
Uganda is the first Airtel market in Africa to use the service. There are plans to roll it out across the continent.
