Cassava and Nvidia to Build Africa’s First AI Factory

Cassava Technologies and Nvidia are teaming up to build Africa’s first AI factory. The facility will provide AI computing capacity across the continent. The AI factory will be located in South Africa, with expansion planned in Kenya, Nigeria, Egypt, and Morocco. It is set to launch by June 2025.

The AI factory will use Nvidia’s AI computing technology. Cassava will deploy Nvidia’s cloud partner reference architectures in its data centres. The facility will also use Cassava’s fibre-optic network to provide AI as a Service (AIaaS).

“This will give African businesses, governments, and researchers access to cutting-edge AI computing capacity – helping them develop smarter AI products, streamline operations and stay competitive in a fast-changing world,” Cassava said.

Boost for African Innovation

The factory will train AI models and improve computing power in Africa. It will also help businesses keep data within Africa. Nvidia’s GPU-based supercomputers will power the facility. The factory will strengthen Africa’s digital infrastructure and boost AI innovation across industries.

“Building digital infrastructure for the AI economy is a priority if Africa is to take full advantage of the fourth industrial revolution. Our AI Factory empowers African businesses, startups, and researchers by providing the cutting-edge infrastructure they need to scale innovation. With this access, we can turn bold ideas into real-world breakthroughs without having to look beyond Africa.” Strive Masiyiwa, founder and executive chairman of Cassava.

Cassava says the AI factory will help industries like healthcare, agriculture, energy, and financial services. It will provide a secure and high-performance AI environment that meets global and local regulations.

“AI is helping innovators solve our greatest challenges in agriculture, healthcare, energy, financial services, and many other industries, creating opportunity in Africa,” said Jaap Zuiderveld, Nvidia’s vice-president for Europe, Middle East, and Africa.

Cassava and Nvidia’s partnership will bring AI technology closer to African businesses and researchers. The AI factory is expected to drive growth and innovation across the continent.
