M-PESA GO, Old Mutual, and KICD Launch Financial Literacy Toolkit for Students

M-PESA GO, Old Mutual, and the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) have unveiled an online financial literacy toolkit. The toolkit targets junior and senior school students.

This new learning resource follows a teachers’ training platform launched in June to equip teachers with financial skills. The goal is to help teachers pass knowledge to students.

The toolkit includes interactive sessions and gamified digital experiences. These features allow students to engage directly with financial experts in an engaging and dynamic way.

Empowering the Next Generation

Speaking at the event, Safaricom PLC Chief Financial Services Officer Esther Waititu highlighted Kenya’s evolving financial ecosystem. She noted its impact on financial education.

“Kenya has a youthful population, which means young people play a major role in economic growth now and in the future,” Waititu said.

“As such, it is important to build their financial capabilities. This requires a concerted effort from the public, private, and social sectors. Financial literacy is essential to financial stability, which is one of our main objectives.”

Waititu also emphasized the benefits of teaching financial health at an early age.

“They are more likely to save for a rainy day, to invest wisely, to borrow judiciously when necessary,” she said.

“And they are less likely to fall prey to fraud or predatory practices,” she added.

Old Mutual Group CEO Arthur Oginga stressed the urgency of financial education for young people.

“We must act now to nurture a healthy relationship between young people and money, promote financial resilience, and cultivate overall financial wellness,” he said.

A Partnership for Positive Change

Oginga praised the partnership between Old Mutual and Safaricom. He said the collaboration combines digital innovation with a deep understanding of financial challenges.

“Our shared commitment to digital innovation and a deep understanding of the financial landscape enables us to develop impactful solutions that improve lives,” he said.

The toolkit is now available for download on the M-PESA Go and Old Mutual websites.
