13th Africa Internet Governance Forum to Shape Africa’s Digital Future in Addis Ababa

The 13th Africa Internet Governance Forum (AfIGF) will take place from November 20-22, 2024, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This event, hosted at the United Nations Conference Center, focuses on building a collaborative digital future for Africa.

The AfIGF is organized by the AfIGF Secretariat, the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), and Ethiopia’s Ministry of Innovation and Technology. It will bring together policymakers, civil society, technical experts, and young innovators to discuss Africa’s digital landscape.

The theme for this year is “Building Our Multi-Stakeholder Digital Future for Africa.” It highlights the importance of inclusivity in internet governance. Discussions will address key issues such as cybersecurity, digital rights, sustainability, and emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Key Sessions and Goals

The forum will feature high-level sessions focusing on strategies for digital inclusion and innovation. A Parliamentary Track will enable African legislators to discuss internet policy frameworks. The Youth Forum will include young leaders in shaping Africa’s digital future.

Workshops on national and regional internet governance will help align local initiatives with global goals. These sessions aim to strengthen Africa’s digital ecosystem while promoting meaningful connectivity.

The outcomes of AfIGF 2024 will also shape Africa’s contributions to the 19th Global Internet Governance Forum in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Organizers emphasize alignment with global frameworks. “We aim to strengthen Africa’s digital ecosystem through sustainable, secure, and inclusive digital policies that protect digital rights,” they stated.

The AfIGF 2024 will support Africa’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the African Union Agenda 2063. It also ties into the Global Digital Compact and the Africa WSIS+20 Review process.

This event promises to shape Africa’s internet governance for the future, and empower stakeholders across the continent.
