Program aligned with major’s ‘commitment to nurturing new talent and encouraging fresh perspectives’

IMARC’s landmark NextGen education and leadership program connects a diverse group of potential future mining leaders with authentic industry insights.

According to Newmont’s acting head of external relations, Simon Troeth, the program reveals what lies ahead for the industry.

The major is sponsoring the Sydney event’s unique CoRE Learning Gamification Zone, an integral part of the expanded NextGen program.

This year, the program is expected to involve over 500 primary, secondary, and tertiary students from across Australia.

The learning area will showcase CoRE’s Gamifying Earth Science series, utilizing Minecraft to enhance student engagement and understanding.

Additionally, the expanding impact of its national schools and educator network will be highlighted, promoting collaboration and innovation.

Australia’s growing importance in Newmont’s global strategy underlines the importance of IMARC as a communication stage, says Troeth. A number of the company’s senior leaders will speak at the event on responsible mining, innovation, sustainability and collaboration issues.

“IMARC 2024 will be a pivotal platform for Newmont to connect with a diverse audience that is essential for driving innovation and sustainability within the mining sector,” Troeth said.

“Our core messages centre on empowering the next generation of leaders, driving technological advancement and fostering a culture of inclusivity within the mining industry.

“Newmont recognizes the richness of the expanded IMARC NextGen program, especially through its interactive Gamification Zone. This initiative aligns with Newmont’s commitment to nurturing new talent and encouraging fresh perspectives within the industry.

“Traditional learning methods require transformation into dynamic experiences that resonate with younger professionals. They also encourage hands-on learning in the mining sector. This approach fosters a sense of community among emerging leaders, enhancing their skills and collaboration.

“The curation of the NextGen program is distinct in its focus on interactive and experiential learning, moving away from traditional lecture formats to integrate gamification elements and add a layer of excitement and competition. This will embed knowledge, encourage collaboration, foster a sense of community and cultivate shared purpose.

“The program’s hands-on approach encourages a deeper understanding of the topics discussed and facilitates practical skill development, making the learning experience more insightful and enduring.”

Troeth stated that the program was thoughtfully designed to address the specific needs and interests of new mining industry leaders.

It emphasizes contemporary issues like sustainability, technology, and innovation, ensuring relevance to the next generation of leaders.

“The IMARC NextGen program will help drive the future of mining by bringing together a diverse group of aspiring leaders and facilitating meaningful interactions,” he said.

“It plays a crucial role in fostering a new generation of professionals who are committed to making a positive impact in the sector.

The Role of Networking in Shaping Future Leaders in the Mining Industry

The NextGen program also highlighted the importance of building relationships, Troeth said.

As emphasised by CoRE (Centre of Resource Excellence) Learning Foundation founder Suzy Urbaniak, “the value of connection cannot be overstated”.

“Strong networks are essential for sharing insights and resources,” Troeth said.

“The NextGen program creates numerous opportunities for participants to engage with peers, mentors and industry leaders, lighting the path for future collaborations and partnerships.

“The emphasis on networking, inclusivity and relationship-building sets the NextGen program apart.

“By facilitating connections among a diverse group of participants, the program creates a supportive network that extends beyond the event itself.

These relationships are crucial for knowledge exchange and collaboration. They also enable young leaders to tap into a broader community of resources and support.

Building on last year’s 10th edition, IMARC 2024 expects to attract more than 9,000 industry professionals from over 120 countries.

“On an international scale, IMARC positions itself as a critical nexus for dialogue and partnership among diverse stakeholders,” Troeth said.

Newmont aims to leverage this platform to communicate its commitment to responsible mining and the importance of innovation for sustainability.
