Intelsat, a leading satellite services provider, has unveiled a new satellite cellular backhaul platform in Lagos, Nigeria. The service, called Intelsat CellBackhaul Nigeria, aims to improve mobile connectivity in the region.
It supports mobile network operators (MNOs) and internet service providers (ISPs) by enabling faster and more affordable network expansion.
The new solution will leverage Intelsat’s satellite and terrestrial networks to extend mobile coverage in rural areas. This is particularly important in West Africa, where many regions still lack access to reliable mobile networks. The service will also integrate with existing platforms in other African countries.
A Step Toward Closing the Digital Gap
Intelsat and its partner, Africa Mobile Networks (AMN), have already installed over 3,000 rural satellite base antennas in various African nations. By 2023, these installations had provided telecommunications services to more than 8 million people.
The companies plan further expansions in Madagascar, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Rhys Morgan, Regional Vice President of Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (RVP EMEA) at Intelsat, stressed the role of satellite technology in bridging the digital divide.
He noted, “Satellite backhaul is often the most viable option for a rapid, reliable, cost-effective connectivity solution to connect unconnected populations in rural and remote locations.”
Satellite Services to Overcome Infrastructure Challenges
According to Intelsat, nearly 50% of the 400 million people without mobile broadband coverage live in sub-Saharan Africa.
The region faces significant usage and coverage gaps, with the lack of infrastructure being a key issue. Traditional infrastructure deployment is often too costly and slow to meet the demand in rural areas.
Morgan added that the new service allows MNOs and ISPs to extend their coverage without facing the usual infrastructure challenges.
Intelsat’s platform ensures high-throughput connectivity, benefitting both individuals and organizations. The service is crucial for emergency providers and those in need, especially in remote regions.
Intelsat CellBackhaul marks a significant step toward improving digital access across Nigeria and Africa. The service aims to connect populations that are currently underserved, making digital communication more accessible.
