Ghana Ranks Among Top Nations in Global Cybersecurity Index 2024

Ghana has been ranked Tier 1 in the 2024 Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI). This top rating recognizes Ghana as a leader in cybersecurity. The ranking was released by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

Tier 1 is the highest status in the five-tier system. It places Ghana among nations that serve as cybersecurity role models. With a remarkable score of 99.27%, Ghana ranks second in Africa, just behind Mauritius.

The GCI evaluates countries based on five key areas: Legal Measures, Technical Measures, Organizational Measures, Capacity Building, and Cooperation. Ghana’s ranking signifies improvements in all areas compared to its 2020 score of 86.69%.

Ghana Key Achievements in Cybersecurity

Ghana’s success stems from its Cybersecurity Act, 2020 (Act 1038). The law is considered a model for the global south. Under this act, the country has implemented key provisions such as licensing cybersecurity service providers. It is also the second country worldwide to enforce this industry protocol.

Additionally, Ghana has safeguarded its Critical Information Infrastructure (CII) to protect essential systems. The Joint Cybersecurity Committee (JCC) has played a critical role in coordinating efforts between the public and private sectors.

Moreover, Ghana revised its National Cybersecurity Policy and Strategy. The annual National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM) is another initiative boosting cybersecurity awareness across different sectors.

Despite the high score, Ghana still needs to boost its capacity development. This includes expanding training and securing more funding to support cybersecurity growth.

Countries like Nigeria and Cameroon are currently in Tier 3, indicating they are still establishing key cybersecurity initiatives. Ghana’s lead sets a high bar, but continued efforts are required to maintain it.

Ghana’s new status as a role model in cybersecurity shows its commitment to protecting its digital ecosystem.
